Success Story of Maize Cultivation

Taking into consideration the above situation, Krishi Vigyan Kendra East Khasi Hills District took the initiative to introduce Hybrid Quality Protein Maize (HQPM-1) through On Farm Trials in this village under a number of progressive farmers. The objectives of these trials was to increase the yield and to make quality protein available to the farmers from this particular crop and being both a kharif and Rabi season crop, it would help in providing year round income. It will also be able to produce good quality protein when used as a feed for the livestock. Trainings, Method Demonstrations and Film show were conducted to motivate the farmers to adopt the new technology.

The intervention was a success as the farmers were able to produce an average yield of 5.792 tonnes per hectare which was almost four times in comparison to the local variety. The total cost of cultivation was recorded as Rs. 41317.74 having a net return of Rs. 36082.26 with Benefit cost ratio of 1.87. The stover produced was able to provide feed for the livestock and as an input for production of compost for the next crop. Considering the benefit of this enterprise and the acceptance of the farmers for this technology, KVK has decided to conduct demonstrations in the coming year to popularize this variety.
